Jones was so taken with the Beatles’ Abbey Road, he claims he had to respond, just to say “thanks.” He convened the MG’s — drummer Al Jackson Jr., bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn, and guitarist Steve Cropper, and recorded McLemore Avenue, a cover version of the entire Abbey Road album in three long medleys (that approximated the structure of the Beatles’ album — particularly its second side) with a cover of George Harrison’s “Something” set aside as a single. The MG’s even aped the Beatles’ cover photo, with one of them strolling down McLemore Avenue, the home of Stax Records. Booker T. & the MG’s turned an already hip record into one that was funky as hell, and one that kept listeners guessing by rearranging the order of the tunes to suit the MG’s as a band. The set begins with a medley of “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End/Here Comes the Sun/Come Together.” The juxtaposition of the first two cuts is jarring but seamless. The quartet nails “The End,” with fine soloing from Cropper and heated work from Jones on organ and electric piano, before a crescendo and a Moog intros “Here Comes the Sun,” done as a summery Jimmy Smith-styled jazz number before turning all sinister on “Come Together.” “Something” may have seemed a curious choice for a single, but with Cropper’s greasy, bluesy guitar break and Jones playing his organ rhythmically more than melodically, it works beautifully. “Because,” wedded to “You Never Give Me Your Money,” is a spacious blend of melody and psychedelic groove, setting up the final medley. It is the set’s tour de force, commencing with a shimmering “Sun King,” before Jackson’s drums announce a sprightly, funky “Mean Mr. Mustard” that careens into the guitar overdrive of “Polythene Pam” and the breezy “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window,” which morphs into a dramatic, blues-drenched, “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” to close it out. Not only is McLemore Avenue a stellar interpretation of Abbey Road, it’s one of the finest Booker T. & the MG’s albums to boot. ~ Thom Jurek |

Much of this formula is used in Ammonia Avenue, only this time the songs rise above Parsons’ overall message due to the sheer beauty of the lyrics partnered with the luster of the instruments. The album touches upon how the lines of communication between people are diminishing, and how we as a society grow more spiritually isolated and antisocial. But aside from the philosophical concepts prevalent in the lyrics, it is the music on this album that comes to the forefront. The enchanting saxophone of Mel Collins on “Don’t Answer Me” adds to its lonely atmosphere, while the briskness of Eric Woolfson’s wording throughout “Prime Time” makes it one of the Project’s best singles. On “You Don’t Believe,” the seriousness of the lyrics works well with the song’s energetic pace. The subtlety of the ballad comes to life on the elegant “Since the Last Goodbye,” which focuses on a failed attempt at a relationship. With Ammonia Avenue, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole product, which can’t be said for all of the Alan Parsons Project’s albums. The music is often-dense rock dominated by a rhythm section led by guitarist Eric Bazilian of the Hooters. Equally dense is Andersen’s highly poetic versifying, which he sings in his gruff baritone. Andersen is world-weary in these songs, roaming the globe haunted by the past and fearful of the future. He confesses to a reckless youth, but acknowledges that he can no longer afford such license. “What once was Charles Bukowski,” he sings in “Before Everything Changed,” referring to the free-living beat poet, “is now Emily Dickinson.” The ballads and love songs “Song of You and Me,” “Shape of a Broken Heart,” “Under the Shadows,” and “Still Looking for You” are rendered tenderly, but they are also full of regret and loss, past-tense reflections that recount memories of love long gone. The first disc of Beat Avenue is complete and formidable unto itself, but there is a second CD consisting of two lengthy songs. The title track, running more than 26 minutes, is a beat poem with jazzy accompaniment by Robert Aaron in which Andersen recalls a poetry reading he attended as a 20-year-old on the day President Kennedy was assassinated. Since the ladies include Vickie, Jane, Anne, Claire and Rose (Barbara Harris, Karen Valentine, Susan Clark, Cloris Leachman and Patsy Kelly), we’re well primed for a surfeit of feistiness. Father Michael entrusts the church funds to Rose, who loses it all at the race track. In trying to retrieve the cash, he comes up against an influential bookie ring, controlled by several of the above-suspicion town officials. The wily priest responds by organizing the ladies of his congregation into the North Avenue Irregulars, a two-fisted crimefighting unit. There’s slapstick aplenty within the film’s 99 minutes, including the expected comic car crash.
