Voice Of The Blood $8.99 VOICE OF THE BLOOD is so named because the texts of Hildegard of Bingen’s songs performed here refer often to the spilled blood of St. Ursula and her 11,000 virgins. Sequentia wonderfully presents Hildegard’s monophonic “song cycle” here in the order she probably intended.Ursula lived in the 4th Century, but at the time Hildegard lived (12th Century) her tale of divine virginity inspired renewed interest in her cult, mainly through the supposed discovery of her bones and the visions of her received by Elisabeth of Sch?nau.Ursula was promised to a pagan English prince, but was saved from this marriage by an angelic order to make a pilgrimage to Rome. She was accompanied by 11 noblewomen (which over time was inflated to 11,000). On their way back her group was killed in Cologne by Attila the Hun (not historically viable, but such is folklore).Hildegard, a highly spiritual woman who herself received divine messages (the last song on this release contains words she created to depict the indescribable things she saw and heard), obviously knew, loved and related to Ursula’s story. String Quartets $17.99 This CD was recorded at WDR Cologne and Immanuelkirche Wuppertal.Peter Ruzicka’s string quartets are distinctively postmodern. Rather than building themes and weaving them together into a unified whole, Ruzicka’s music revels in its fragmentation. Constantly stopping and starting, the pieces are built not on themes so much as moods, each fragment touching upon an aspect of the emotion.’…?ber ein Verschwinden’ ['...Beyond a Void'] embodies much of Ruzicka’s introverted tendencies, juxtaposing an eerie silence with solitary, high-pitched strings. However, the swelling stings of ‘Klangschatten’ ['Sound shadow'] and the frenzied undulations within the second movement of ‘…fragment…’ show a turbulent undercurrent within his creativity. The variety found within the latter piece puts the listener on an emotional roller coaster–it juxtaposes serenity and cacophony from movement to movement, each note and rest more potent than the one preceding it.The Arditti Quartet captures all the subtleties of these compositions, quite a feat considering the highly intellectualized structure and abrupt nature of the passages. Winkel) is a French art student living in Germany who loves to draw comics and creates elaborate tales drawn in a soft and romantic style. One night, Angela meets Yamamoto (Jon Yang), a club DJ from Japan, who invites her to come to Tokyo with him. Infatuated with Yamamoto, Angela impulsively agrees, and is soon sharing an apartment with a handful of Western expatriates who work at a nightclub where Japanese businessmen drink, sing karaoke, and date the “hostesses” for a fee. When money runs low, Angela signs on to work at the club, but when a customer is murdered in an ongoing mob war, she realizes she’s entered a far more dangerous world than she imagined. The frantic pace of the city and the violence of her new environment has a strong impact on her artwork, which loses its serene qualities and becomes increasingly aggressive and mechanical. Eisenhower’s bestseller Crusade in Europe, the series World War II: When the World Went to War explores some of the pivotal events which characterized the conflict that shook the world from 1939-1945, as the shadow of fascism loomed over the European continent. Subtitled “Allied Troops, Final Battles Parts 1 & 2,” this tripartite volume begins with the segment “Dunkirk, North Africa, Italy” – a discussion of the three titular battles that took place during the first years of the war. Next up is “Battle of Nations at Monte Cassino, Battle of the Bulge, The Allies Cross Over the Rhine River,” which tells how the Cassino engagements (intended to help the Allies capture Rome) led to an unholy number of casualties including over 54,000 Allied injuries and 20,000 on the German side; the episode then segues into a discussion of the bloody Battle of the Bulge, which cost 20,000 American soldiers, and the crossing of the Rhine, which led directly to the capture of Cologne. The group draws on Cajun (a hybrid of American country and traditional French folk songs) and zydeco (a hybrid of Cajun and R&B) with the respect of traditionalists but with enough vigor and inventiveness to make the music jump to life. Though some Beausoleil releases experiment with modernizing the music, adding electric instruments and contemporary production flourishes, PARLEZ NOW A BOIRE sticks close to the source.Ballads like “Mercredi Soir Passe” and two-steps such as “Sue” and “La Rue Canal,” sweetened by lilting accordion and fiddle melodies, evoke an age-old musical tradition of acoustic, back porch music making. Drums, triangle, and spoons add percussive texture to the more up-tempo reels and jigs, but the predominant mood of PARLEZ is subdued (especially in comparison to the band’s rave-up party discs such as BAYOU CADILLAC). Bonus cuts from the PARLEZ sessions and additional tracks from Beausoleil’s first Arhoolie album are welcome lagniappes to this fine collection of traditional folk music. |
