Full Circle (Bonus Track) (Japan) $49.99 Getting right back to where they started from, Creed reunites for Full Circle, putting all tensions to rest and cutting their first album in eight years. FULL CIRCLE is a none-too-subtle allusion to how they’re getting back to their beginnings, but a cynic could say they never got much past it, toiling the same weathered ground on each of their albums, but this bears some subtle differences, particularly in how Creed sounds heavier yet more open than they did in the past. While they’re still delivered with the finesse of a hammer on a railroad spike, there’s more air within the ballads, more skill in their attack, a looseness to their playing that allows them to take a stab at white-boy blues on the title track. “Full Circle” is one of several songs built on prominent acoustic guitar, an indication of the greater color palette here than on, say, HUMAN CLAY, and that lack of reliance on thudding guitars does make FULL CIRCLE less wearying than earlier Creed, but don’t mistake this for subtlety: ambiguity is not Creed’s friend; they still italicize, bold, and underscore every emotion.

When Rocky is offered lucrative product endorsement opportunities, his limited education and lack of sophistication quickly become an impediment to his future success, causing him embarrassment and his pregnant wife, Adrian (Talia Shire), a great deal of financial concern. Meanwhile, Creed is brooding over his near loss to a fighter he considers an amateur far beneath him and decides to goad a reluctant Rocky into a high-profile rematch. 3rd from the Sun [12inch Vinyl Disc] $18.98 Given how good the Edge/Creed/Stench lineup was, the fact that they never properly toured outside two dates — one in San Francisco and the other, bizarrely, in Italy — is all the more regrettable. Continuing the blend of straight-up rock crunch and crumbling weirdness that made the Chrome name, 3rd is both just accessible and just gone enough. Opening track “Firebomb” sets the stage well — Edge sings in deep basso profundo mode, the Stench brothers keep the beat going, and Creed unleashes more incredible, strong soloing to go with his crisp rhythm work. It’s another shoulda-been new wave classic that would still seem out of place among its fellows. From there it’s another trip into the “not quite right” — “Armageddon” is especially strong, an eight-minute slow burn toward doom with overly appropriate downbeat rhythms. Creed once again shines with his heavily treated fretwork; when toward the end he tracks two separate solos playing off each other, things really go to town. Another spooky highlight of his work is “Off the Line,” where more upfront death dirges are alternated with buried, creepy effects in the background. Creed gets in some vocal fun as well — at least, assuming it is him given the constant production treatments — on “Heart Beat,” his distorted words sneaking around the crisp beat and wheezing keyboards as well as the usual addition of feedback crunch. The title track was suitably freaked out and heavy enough for Prong to cover it years later on their Beg to Differ album. Though Hendrix’s “Third Stone from the Sun” may seem an obvious source of inspiration, the distorted vocals and steady beats come much more from Chrome’s collective brain. ~ Ned Raggett

Alien Soundtracks [LP] $18.98 With Creed recruited to replace original member Mike Low (though allegedly Edge initially turned Creed down after the latter appeared wearing a pirate outfit or something similar), Chrome started kicking into high gear at last. While Spain and Lambdin weren’t out of the picture yet, cowriting half the songs with Edge, Creed’s mind-melting guitar swiftly took prominence, turning a wiggy band into a total headtrip. Rather than just aiming at acid-rock styling, Creed stuffed his fretbending into an evil, compressed aggro-sound, at once psychedelic and totally in-your-face. Edge equals the activity by stepping into the vocal role himself, sounding like Iggy on a live wire with occasional attempts at weird, wailed crooning, while his electronics and drumming starts sounding a lot more vicious and totally scuzzed as well. It’s not the short sharp shock of punk rock per se — it just sounds like the title puts it, alien, sounds and TV samples firing out of nowhere and throwing the listener off balance. That many numbers are constructed out of short fragments adds to the weird overlay. Even the quieter numbers like “All Data Lost” play around with echo and drone to create disturbing results. The songs themselves allegedly were recorded as the soundtrack to a live sex show, which probably goes a long way towards explaining the sex and sci-fi combination of much of the lyrics. Not to mention the titles — to quote some at random: “Nova Feedback,” “Magnetic Dwarf Reptile,” and the truly hilarious “Pigmies in Zee Dark” (there’s some creepy crooning on this one) and “Slip It to the Android.” The artwork adds to the weird effect — a hand-colored late fifties ‘cool’ living room and busty babe setup with the band’s and album name hand-scrawled in usual Chrome fashion over it, plus huge disembodied eyes and lips that make everything really disturbing. Overall, the combination of screwy sound and art on a budget placed Chrome as something like West Coast cousins of early Pere Ubu and Destroy All Monsters — not a bad place to be. ~ Ned Raggett

Rocky / Hoosiers [2 Discs / SBS / Blu-ray] - $29.99 Includes:Rocky (1976), MPAA Rating: PG Hoosiers (1986), MPAA Rating: PG Rocky Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. A once-promising pugilist, Rocky is now taking nickel-and-dime bouts and running strongarm errands for local loan sharks to survive. Even his supportive trainer, Mickey (Burgess Meredith), has given up on Rocky. All this changes thanks to Muhammad Ali-like super-boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). With the Bicentennial celebration coming up, Creed must find a “Cinderella” opponent for the big July 4th bout — some unknown whom Creed can “glorify” for a few minutes before knocking him cold. Rocky Balboa was not the only Cinderella involved here: writer/director Sylvester Stallone, himself a virtual unknown, managed to sell his Rocky script (one of 35 that he’d written over the years) on the proviso that he be given the starring role. Since the film was to be made on a shoestring and marketed on a low-level basis, the risk factor to United Artists was small. For Stallone, this was a make-or-break opportunity — just like Rocky’s million-to-one shot with Apollo Creed. Costing under a million dollars, Rocky managed to register with audiences everywhere, earning back 60 times its cost. The film won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Hoosiers Hoosiers tells the true story of a group of underdogs who become champions. Set in the 1950s, Hoosiers is about a hard-luck, unemployed college basketball coach (Gene Hackman) who gets a chance to coach a small-town Indiana high-school basketball team. Liar’s Poker - $9.99 Murder, revenge, and sex are at the center of this two-fisted suspense thriller by young writer/director Jeff Santo.
