Dalida: Pour Toujours - $34.99 Initially released in 1977, director Michel Dumoulin’s feature-length documentary Dalida: Pour Tojours provides an intimate glimpse of the tragic Dalida. The late, Egyptian-born cabaret/music hall queen established herself as a vocal superstar in France during the late 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, and became the only performer in French history to earn a diamond record, but endured the suicides of two lovers and spent many years searching in vain for inner fulfillment, before she herself finally committed suicide via overdose in 1987. Dumoulin followed Dalida with his cameras from day to day over the course of three years in the late seventies, and thus created the only inside glimpse of this woman’s private world that has ever been captured on film. His intention was to journey beyond the fa?ade of a vocal icon and study, cinematically, the woman beneath the public image. Messe Pour le Temps Present $17.99 Though it’s perhaps Henry’s best-known work, Messe Pour le Temps Pr?sent isn’t the best display of the powers of musique concr?te. Similar to the glut of crossover Moog rock albums around the same time, Henry’s occasional bursts of searing computer static are accompanied by a faux ’60s go-go beat. It’s an intriguing release, but works better for novelty fans and beginners who would rather have a gradual immersion into musique concr?te. Ascenseur Pour L’Echafaud - $34.99 The feature-film debut of famed director Louis Malle is an interesting, modern film noir with the classic theme of lovers plotting to kill the husband and make it look like suicide (reminiscent of The Postman Always Rings Twice). Jeanne Moreau, as Florence Carala, gives an astonishing performance, perverse but naive as she leads her young lover down a path that can only lead to doom for both of them. Malle and his cinematographer Henri Decae make extensive use of Paris at night, giving the film the feel of claustrophobia and desperation reminiscent of the classic noir films. Recorded on December 4-5, 1957, the music for Ascenseur Pour l’?chafaud has an elegant, romantic air. Harmonically it is fairly simple, quite unlike many of the tunes Davis was then recording for Prestige and Columbia back in the States. Featuring Miles in the company of such French jazzmen as Pierre Michelot and tenor saxophonist Barney Wilen, Ascenseur Pour l’?chafaud is something of a throwback to the feel of the trumpeter’s early-’50s Blue Note recordings with drummer Kenny Clarke. Rarely has Miles’ open tone been more poignant, and that bittersweet quality probably owes something to his ongoing affair with the film’s leading lady, Jeanne Moreau. Tracks such as “Diner au Motel” and “Sur l’Autoroute” (featuring Kenny Clarke’s wonderful brush work) find Miles and company blowing in a brisk groove, and Wilen proves a coy melodic foil. “Julien dans l’Ascenseur” features Miles’ lovely muted horn bathed in film noir echo, while “Au Bar du Petite Bac” is a bluesy reprise of the main themes, as Miles and Wilen toss weightless phrases back and forth. |

Symphonie Pour le Jour ou Bruleront… [LP] $17.98 Full title: Symphonie Pour le Jour ou Bruleront Les Cites.Personnel: Alain Eckert (vocals, guitar); Thierry Zaboitzeff (vocals, cello); G?rard Hourbette (violin); Jean-Pierre Soarez (trumpet, percussion); Patricia Dallio (piano).In 1976, a self-released LP by Art Zoyd appeared in Belgian record stores. At the time, nobody knew Symphonie Pour le Jour o? Br?leront les Cit?s (Symphony for the Day Cities Will Burn) would be the first of many albums from this strange chamber progressive rock outfit. All the ingredients of Art Zoyd’s sound for its first decade are here: unusual acoustic instrumentation for a rock band (violin, cello, piano, and trumpet, plus guitar, bass, and percussion), dark and mysterious atmospheres recalling France’s Magma and foretelling Univers Zero (formed by Art Zoyd percussionist Daniel Denis), and complex pieces owing as much to contemporary classical as to progressive rock. The lineup for this first offering included Patricia Dallio (piano), Alain Eckert (guitar, vocals), G?rard Hourbette (violin), Jean-Pierre Soarez (trumpet, percussion), and Thierry Zabo?tzeff (bass, cello, vocals). The album is split in two. First is “Symphonie Pour le Jour o? Br?leront les Cit?s,” in three parts, an apocalyptic work opening with mad laughter, a vision of the end of the world with percussion clashing, frenetic violin motifs, and the trumpet from Judgment Day. Part one, Brigades Sp?ciales, is the most striking moment of the album — the band will only reach this kind of intensity again on Phase IV. Then comes “Deux Images de la Cit? Imb?cile” (“Two Pictures of the Stupid City”), two movements leaning more toward some warped chamber rock conception of the burlesque, especially on Sc?nes de Carnaval. For a first exposition, Symphonie Pour le Jour o? Br?leront les Cit?s was as impressive as could be and earned the band an immediate cult following. Moreover, thanks to the acoustic instrumentation, the album has aged very well. Symphonie Pour le Jour o? Jazz in Paris: Blues Pour Flirter $14.99 Although Toots Thielemans is far better-known for his virtuoso harmonica playing, he sticks exclusively to guitar on this pair of studio dates, initially taped in 1961 for Polydor. Accompanied by pianist Georges Arvanitas, bassist Roland Lobligeois, and drummer Philippe Combelle, Thielemans leads a primarily laid-back session with the focus on the leader, covering standards (“Willow Weep for Me” and “We’ll be Together Again”), adding a soft wordless background vocal to “Satin Doll,” and giving a loping treatment to Milt Jackson’s “Bags’ Groove.” No matter that none of Thielemans’ compositions have come close to matching the widespread popularity of his huge hit, “Bluesette”; two blues he wrote for this date, “Le Trottoir” and “Flirt” (the latter of which is the only track to feature his famous whistling), are very enjoyable. Even if this Verve CD reissue falls short of being an essential purchase, any fan of Toots Thielemans will want to acquire it. ~ Ken Dryden |
